About India Post
Department of Post, alias, India Post is a government postal service working under the Ministry of Communication, Government of India. It is considered as the backbone of India's communication and plays a crucial role in country's socio economic development. It has total of 155,015 post offices throughout India with more than four lakhs employees. On the whole world, it is the most widely distributed postal network. India Post has its headquarters in New Delhi.
India Post has centuries old history to go its origin. It was founded in 1 April, 1764 during the time of English East India Company. When the ruling authority was passed over to crown, many rules and acts were enacted to regulate postal and telegraph services. There were 889 post offices during the reign of British Raj. Postal savings bank account, postal life insurance, telegraph, airmail were also introduced during that time.
After Independence, there were 23,344 post offices, primarily disbursed in rural areas. The structure of postal organization has a directorate at its head. Under it there are circle offices, regional offices, superintendent offices, head post offices, sub post offices and branch offices in descending order.There are 23 postal circles in India and it is headed by Chief Postmaster General. Apart from this, there is a base circle which is providing mail services to Armed Forces of India and the control of this service resides with Directorate General. This mail service is giving mail service to Indian military personnel at overseas combat zone at subsidized rate.
India Post is doing multi services like delivery of mails, parcel services, money orders, small savings scheme, Recurring Deposits, Postal Life Insurance, Rural Postal Life Insurance, providing amount under old age pension scheme and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The motto of India Post is 'Service before help'. The logo of India Post was revised in 2008. It is running with a revenue of 129.39 billion Indian Rupees.
